Fabrication of calcium carbonate coated-stainless steel mesh for efficient oil-water separation via bacterially induced biomineralization technique

Sikai Tang et al.

Summary: An environmentally friendly and energy-efficient strategy for fabricating oil-water separation materials using bacterially induced biomineralization and surface modification techniques was developed. The resulting superhydrophobic mesh showed high oil fluxes and separation efficiencies for various oil/water mixtures, along with wear resistance and anti-pollution performance, making it suitable for harsh environments.

Sorption fractionation of bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on mineral surfaces and associated effects on phenanthrene sorption to EPS-mineral complexes

Yiqun Chen et al.

Summary: Microbial EPS are an important source of labile component in natural organic matter, and their sorption behavior to mineral surfaces can significantly affect the sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The type and surface properties of minerals, as well as the biological source of EPS, play key roles in sorption fractionation of EPS on minerals and ultimately impact the sorption affinity of apolar HOCs to EPS-mineral complexes.EPS-mineral complexes exhibited larger sorption coefficients than pristine EPS, indicating that sorptive interactions were facilitated by sorbed EPS on mineral surfaces.

Nitrate, arsenic and fluoride removal by electrodialysis from brackish groundwater

Mehran Aliaskari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of operational and water quality parameters on brackish water decontamination using a batch electrodialysis (ED) system. The results showed the significance of ionic characteristics in ED, with nitrate concentrations satisfying guideline threshold in all experiments. Lowest arsenic(V) concentration was 35 mu g/L at the highest electric potential, 25 V, demonstrating the potential of ED in environmentally friendly processes.

Characterization and mechanism of Mn(II)-based mixotrophic denitrifying bacterium (Cupriavidus sp. HY129) in remediation of nitrate (NO3--N) and manganese (Mn(II)) contaminated groundwater

Yihan Bai et al.

Summary: A novel denitrifying and manganese-oxidizing strain HY129, identified as Cupriavidus sp. HY129, showed high removal efficiency for nitrate and Mn(II) pollution in groundwater. The Mn(II) removal process may be enhanced by extracellular adsorption of Mn(II) via protein in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). Further molecular biology analyses confirmed the mechanisms of Mn(II) oxidation by strain HY129.
