Decisive role of vacuum-assisted carbonization in valorization of lignin-enriched (Juglans regia-shell) biowaste

Balal Yousaf et al.

Summary: Bioenergy is considered a sustainable substitute to fossil-fuel resources, and the negative pressure-induced carbonization process proposed in this study is an effective method for valorizing lignin-enriched biowaste into bio-oil and biochar. The biochars prepared under negative pressure exhibit high heating values comparable to commercial charcoal, while the bio-oils produced under vacuum conditions contain complex hydrocarbons and show potential as heating-oil.

Synthesis of magnetized nitrogen-doped biochar and its high efficiency for elimination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride by activation of peroxymonosulfate

Yang You et al.

Summary: The magnetized nitrogen-doped biochar (MNBC) as an activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) showed high efficiency in degrading ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) and exhibited stability. The system displayed superior CIP removal efficiency, with sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals as the dominant reactive oxide species. Furthermore, the MNBC/PMS system's excellent magnetic properties allowed for easy separation and recovery, with a proposed catalytic mechanism involving the generation of sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals.

Pore volume upgrade of biochar from spent coffee grounds by sodium bicarbonate during torrefaction

Wei-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: A novel approach for upgrading biochar pore volume at low temperatures using sodium bicarbonate as a green additive was developed. The treated biochar showed improved specific surface area, total pore volume, CO2 uptake capacity, higher heating value, and lower ignition temperature. These enhancements make it a potential substitute for coal as fuel, demonstrating its potential for biofuel production, biowaste reuse, and bioadsorbent applications in a circular economy.

Pyrolysis temperature affects pore characteristics of rice straw and canola stalk biochars and biochar-amended soils

Caidi Yang et al.

Summary: The pore characteristics of biochar are affected by the feedstocks and pyrolysis temperature, resulting in varying effects on soil pore properties. Biochar addition alters soil pore size distribution, with different types of biochar impacting soil properties differently. The meso- and micropores in biochars play a crucial role in affecting soil response, with a pyrolysis temperature around 450 degrees Celsius being optimal for producing porous biochar with larger porosity.
