Developmental toxicity of plastic leachates on the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus

Flora Rendell-Bhatti et al.

Summary: The study found that chemicals leached from plastic particles have severe impacts on the development of marine organisms, leading to developmental abnormalities. These findings suggest that microplastic pollution may have unknown negative effects on ecosystems.

UV degradation of natural and synthetic microfibers causes fragmentation and release of polymer degradation products and chemical additives

Lisbet Sorensen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the environmental impact of microfibers in the ocean depends on their degradation, influenced by intrinsic properties and external environmental parameters. Under UV exposure, PET and wool fibers showed changes in surface morphology and fragmentation into smaller particles.

Microplastic fibres from synthetic textiles: Environmental degradation and additive chemical content

Shannen T. L. Sait et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmentally relevant photodegradation of common microplastic fibres (MPFs) such as polyester (PET), polyamide (PA), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). Results showed that PET and PA MPFs underwent significant fragmentation and surface changes under UV exposure, while PAN did not. Chemical analysis identified monomers, UV stabilisers, and degradation products in MPFs and aqueous leachates. Bisphenols (BPs) and benzophenones (BzPs) were also found in all MPFs, with wool displaying the highest concentration of BPs and BzPs.

Chemicals associated with biodegradable microplastic drive the toxicity to the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus

Kristina Klein et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of experiments to investigate the toxicity of microplastics (MPs) on freshwater oligochaetes. The results showed that MPs mixed into the sediment induced stronger adverse effects on the worms compared to layered MPs, while kaolin particles had no adverse effects. The main driver for the toxicity of irregular biodegradable MPs was found to be chemicals associated with the plastic product and its previous content.

Relative importance of aqueous leachate versus particle ingestion as uptake routes for microplastic additives (hexabromocyclododecane) to mussels

Mi Jang et al.

Summary: This study compared two bioaccumulation pathways of the additive HBCD and found that uptake through the aqueous phase is a more significant pathway for bioaccumulation of HBCD from EPS to mussels compared to particle ingestion. The measured HBCD levels in EPS, leachate, and exposed mussels are environmentally relevant concentrations, highlighting the need for further investigation into the fate and effects of chemical additives leached from plastic debris.

Screening of suspected micro(nano)plastics in the Ebro Delta (Mediterranean Sea)

Marta Llorca et al.

Summary: This study is the first to report the use of a double suspect-screening method to assess common polymers and additives in micro(nano)plastics found in environmental waters. It highlights the need to evaluate the impact of plastic pollution on the environment by examining the composition of polymers and additives, as well as the presence of organic contaminants in the particulate fraction.

Leaching of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from microplastics in fish oil: Kinetics and bioaccumulation

Bingbing Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that PBDEs in microplastics can leach upon ingestion, but the leaching kinetics of inherent contaminants from ingested microplastics are poorly understood. Although the bioaccumulation of PBDEs in fish oil can be accelerated in the gastrointestinal tract, the steady-state concentrations of PBDEs in cod tissue lipid through ingestion of microplastics were found to be below the lower end of the global PBDE concentration, suggesting that ingestion of microplastics by organisms remains a negligible pathway.
