The colour of forcing statistics in resolvent analyses of turbulent channel flows

Pierluigi Morra et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear forcing term in turbulent channel flows was quantified and analyzed, revealing a structured nature with a solenoidal part affecting the velocity field. An approximation using the most energetic SPOD modes captured the bulk of the response, while the projection of the nonlinear forcing onto the linear sub-optimal forcings demonstrated the limitations of linear optimal forcing representation. Additionally, the Cess eddy-viscosity-modeled forcing was shown to improve the accuracy of resolvent analysis predictions by projecting onto the linear sub-optimal forcings similarly to DNS data.

Forcing statistics in resolvent analysis: application in minimal turbulent Couette flow

Petronio A. S. Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the nonlinear terms in turbulent Couette flow at Reynolds number 400 and establishes a quantitative relationship between the covariance matrices of velocity and forcing through the resolvent operator. The dominance of certain nonlinear terms in predicting the statistical properties of streamwise vortices and streaks, as well as the coherent structure of forcing at low frequencies, is observed as key features of the flow. Constructive and destructive interferences between different forcing components greatly modify the flow response, illustrating the importance of forcing 'colour' in this context.

Resolvent-based estimation of turbulent channel flow using wall measurements

Filipe R. Amaral et al.

Summary: A resolvent-based methodology is used to estimate velocity and pressure fluctuations in turbulent channel flows, with optimal results achieved when true forcing statistics are utilized. Comparisons with approximate forcing models show the significant benefit of using true forcing statistics in accurately estimating flow structures.

State estimation in turbulent channel flow from limited observations

Mengze Wang et al.

Summary: Estimation of the initial state of turbulent channel flow from limited data is investigated using an adjoint-variational approach. The study demonstrates the robustness of the algorithm to observation noise and evaluates the impact of the spatiotemporal density of the data on estimation quality. Results show a resolution threshold for successful reconstruction and highlight the difficulty of reconstructing wall-detached motions from wall data.
