Dissecting and modelling the comparative adaptation to water limitation of sorghum and maize: role of transpiration efficiency, transpiration rate and height

E. J. van Oosterom et al.

Summary: The study found that there was limited effect of species and height on transpiration efficiency (TE), but significant effect on transpiration rate per unit green leaf area (TGLA), mainly attributed to differences in biomass allocation. Maize had higher TGLA compared to the 3dwarf sorghum, potentially producing more biomass. The simulation study predicted crossover interactions for grain yield between species and total water use, highlighting that similarity in TE and differences in TGLA can influence comparative adaptation to water limitation.
