Renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, economic complexity, CO2 emissions, and ecological footprint in the USA: testing the EKC hypothesis with a structural break

Ugur Korkut Pata

Summary: The study found that in the case of the USA, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic complexity and environmental pollution. Globalization and renewable energy consumption play a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution, while non-renewable energy consumption contributes to environmental pressure.

Determinants of Carbon Emission in China: How Good is Green Investment?

Zheng-Zheng Li et al.

Summary: The rapid industrialization and modernization of China's economy have worsened climate change caused by carbon emissions. Green investments can reduce carbon emissions, while natural resource extraction, financial sector development, and energy investments tend to increase carbon emissions. Bidirectional causation is observed between carbon emissions and other macroeconomic aggregates considered in the study.

Environmental degradation in ASEAN: assessing the criticality of natural resources abundance, economic growth and human capital

Solomon Prince Nathaniel

Summary: The ASEAN countries have seen significant economic progress over the years, but face challenges of unsustainable natural resource exploitation and environmental degradation. The study reveals that economic growth and natural resources have adverse effects on environmental quality, while human capital is not efficient in mitigating environmental degradation in the ASEAN region. There are variations in the impact of natural resources on the environment across different countries.

Estimating the macroeconomic determinants of total, renewable, and non-renewable energy demands in Bangladesh: the role of technological innovations

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: Bangladesh is poised to become one of the leading emerging market economies, expecting substantial economic growth and increased energy consumption levels over the next decade. Economic growth and household consumption expenditure positively influence energy demand, while income inequality has opposite effects. Technological innovations reduce non-renewable energy demand and increase renewable energy demand, with oil price shocks having minimal impact on energy demand.

Renewable Energy Use and Ecological Footprints Mitigation: Evidence from Selected South Asian Economies

Lian Xue et al.

Summary: The study found that renewable energy consumption reduces ecological footprints, while nonrenewable energy use increases ecological footprints. Additionally, the results confirm the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve and pollution haven hypotheses in South Asian countries. Foreign direct investment inflows were also shown to have a negative impact on the environment.

Exploring Asymmetric Nexus Between CO2 Emissions, Environmental Pollution, and Household Health Expenditure in China

Muhammad Zeeshan et al.

Summary: The study found an asymmetric relationship between CO2 emissions, environmental pollution, and household health expenditure in China, with positive shocks of CO2 emissions and pollution positively affecting health expenditure in both the short and long run, while negative shocks reduce health spendings. The results also showed a bi-directional causality among household health spendings, CO2 emissions, and environmental pollution.

The influences of renewable electricity generation, technological innovation, financial development, and economic growth on ecological footprints in ASEAN-5 countries

Ayoub Zeraibi et al.

Summary: In Southeast Asian countries, renewable energy and technological innovation can reduce ecological footprints, while financial development and economic growth increase ecological footprints. Therefore, in the future, efforts should be made to enhance renewable electricity generation capacity, invest in technological development, and adopt green growth policies to ensure complementarity between economic growth and environmental welfare.

Can regional trade integration facilitate renewable energy transition to ensure energy sustainability in South Asia?

Muntasir Murshed

Summary: This paper examines the impacts of regional trade integration on the transition to renewable energy in South Asian economies. The study highlights the importance of promoting intra-regional trade to boost renewable energy consumption and electricity output shares, as well as reveals the non-linear relationships between intra-regional trade shares and renewable energy indicators. The results suggest policy implications for liberalizing trade barriers, reducing foreign direct investment in dirty industries, and accelerating economic growth to facilitate renewable energy transition in South Asia.

The nexuses between energy investments, technological innovations, emission taxes, and carbon emissions in China

Qiang Ma et al.

Summary: This paper analyzed the impacts of emission taxes, investments in the energy sector, expenditure on research and development, technological innovation, and tertiary sector development on Chinese provincial carbon dioxide emission figures between 1995 and 2019. The study found that provincial growth and tertiary sector development exacerbated carbon dioxide emissions, while higher energy investments, technological innovation, renewable energy use, expenditure on research and development, and carbon emission taxes mitigated carbon dioxide emissions. Policy-level recommendations were made based on the findings.

Modelling the dynamic linkages between eco-innovation, urbanization, economic growth and ecological footprints for G7 countries: Does financial globalization matter?

Mahmood Ahmad et al.

Summary: The study found that financial globalization and eco-innovation can reduce the ecological footprints of G7 countries, while urbanization stimulates environmental degradation. The relationship between economic growth and ecological footprints is inverted U-shaped, indicating the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in G7 countries.

Oil price shocks and renewable energy transition: Empirical evidence from net oil-importing South Asian economies

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nonlinear association between renewable energy consumption and crude oil prices in four South Asian economies, suggesting that a threshold level of crude oil price is reached before further hikes can elevate renewable energy consumption. Nonlinearity is also confirmed in the context of oil prices and renewable energy share, with rising oil prices not enhancing renewable electricity shares. The causality results imply that movements in crude oil prices play a role in shaping energy transition in these economies.

The roles of export diversification and composite country risks in carbon emissions abatement: evidence from the signatories of the regional comprehensive economic partnership agreement

Zeeshan Khan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impacts of export diversification and composite risk index on CO2 emissions for the RCEP countries, finding that lowering the composite risk index, transitioning to renewable energy, and enhancing environmentally-related technological innovations can help reduce CO2 emissions in the long run, while export diversification may boost CO2 emission levels.

On the nonlinear relationship between energy use and CO2 emissions within an EKC framework: Evidence from panel smooth transition regression in the MENA region

Nidhaleddine Ben Cheikh et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach for analyzing the dynamic relationships between CO2 emissions, energy use, and income in the Middle East and North African region using a nonlinear panel smooth transition regression framework. The empirical findings show that pollutant emissions respond nonlinearly to energy consumption and GDP growth. The study reveals an inverted U-shaped pattern for the impact of energy on CO2 emissions and highlights that GDP growth significantly impacts carbon emissions only for higher energy consumption growth.
