Solid peroxides in Fenton-like reactions at near neutral pHs: Superior performance of MgO2 on the accelerated reduction of ferric species

Yitong Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that Urea Hydrogen Peroxide (UHP) can instantly release H2O2 and exhibits similar behavior as H2O2 in Fenton-like reactions. Additionally, MgO2 released H2O2 quickly in phosphate buffered solutions, showing a faster rate compared to CaO2 but slower than ZnO2. Metal peroxides induced higher initial phenol degradation rates than UHP and H2O2 under the same theoretical H2O2 dosages and Fe(III)EDTA conditions.

Ascorbate guided conversion of hydrogen peroxide to hydroxyl radical on goethite

Xiaobing Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of ascorbate reduces the conversion of H2O2 to O-2 and increases the conversion to (OH)-O-center dot on goethite. This is due to the efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle accelerated by ascorbate, resulting in abundant Fe(II) on the goethite surface favoring the conversion of H2O2 to (OH)-O-center dot. Meanwhile, decreased surface Fe(III) inhibits the conversion of H2O2 to O-2.

Insight into influence mechanisms of pyrite and vernadite on the degradation performance of 2,2′,5-trichlorodiphenyl in a pyrophosphate-chelated Fenton-like reaction

Yi Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that FeS2 slightly increased the degradation efficiency of PCB18 in PCFR, while δ-MnO2 significantly decreased it. The promoting effect of FeS2 was attributed to homogeneous Fenton-like reaction catalyzed by released Fe ions, while the decrease caused by δ-MnO2 was due to aggravation of H2O2 disproportionation and generation of amorphous ferric (hydr)oxide. The redox activity of FeS2 and δ-MnO2 was unable to efficiently enhance the remediation performance of PCFR.

Calcium superphosphate as an inorganic stabilizer for modified-Fenton treatment of diesel-contaminated soil with two different exogenous iron sources

Jiaolong Qin et al.

Summary: The study showed that the use of CAP stabilizer in the H2O2 treatment with two exogenous iron species can extend the lifetime of H2O2 in soil and enhance diesel removal efficiency. Specifically, the diesel removal efficiency in the IC based process was significantly higher than that in the IB based process.

Use of mine waste for H2O2-assisted heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of tetracycline by natural pyrite nanoparticles: Catalyst characterization, degradation mechanism, operational parameters and cytotoxicity assessment

Ali Mashayekh-Salehi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the degradation of tetracycline using a heterogeneous Fenton-like pyrite/H2O2 process, revealing that hydroxyl radicals were the main oxidizing agents. The most effective degradation occurred at an acidic pH value of 4.1. Results showed that the cytotoxicity of tetracycline was reduced after treatment with pyrite/H2O2, indicating that pyrite is an effective catalyst for mineralization and degradation of emerging contaminants.
