Annual Research Review: Anterior Modifiers in the Emergence of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (AMEND)-a systems neuroscience approach to common developmental disorders

Mark H. Johnson et al.

Summary: The AMEND framework aims to redefine the field of future research on neurodevelopmental disorders by proposing methods to separate early-stage disturbance markers from later developmental modifiers. Understanding how different perturbations and modifiers interact to produce phenotypic outcomes can advance both theoretical understanding and clinical approaches to developmental psychopathology in early childhood.

Clinical and Translational Implications of an Emerging Developmental Substructure for Autism

John N. Constantino et al.

Summary: A significant portion of the population-attributable risk for autism is related to inherited polygenic risk. Recent studies suggest that inherited susceptibility may impact early developmental liabilities, predicting familial recurrence of the convergent syndrome of social communication disability that defines autism. This research points towards a novel developmental substructure for autism, with implications for understanding its neurobiological causes and informing future therapeutic approaches.

Beyond Baby Siblings-Expanding the Definition of High-Risk Infants in Autism Research

Nicole M. McDonald et al.

Summary: The research reviewed the understanding of early development in children with autism from high-risk infant groups beyond familial risk. Studies showed that about 7% of very preterm infants are later diagnosed with ASD, highlighting the importance of broadening knowledge on early markers of autism for more individualized interventions.

Autistic Self-Advocacy and the Neurodiversity Movement: Implications for Autism Early Intervention Research and Practice

Kathy Leadbitter et al.

Summary: The growth of autistic self-advocacy and the neurodiversity movement has sparked new ethical, theoretical, and ideological debates within autism theory, research, and practice. Intervention stakeholders are urged to engage with autistic perspectives and the concept of neurodiversity, reframing effectiveness, developing tools for measuring autistic priorities, and forming partnerships with autistic individuals. Reflecting on intervention practices within a neurodiversity framework is crucial for promoting natural developmental processes, coping strategies, autonomy, and well-being.

Predicting Uncertain Multi-Dimensional Adulthood Outcomes From Childhood and Adolescent Data in People Referred to Autism Services

Gordon Forbes et al.

Summary: The study showed good predictive performance for verbal and non-verbal IQ, and daily living skills from the age of 9. Predictions for symptom severity, hyperactivity and irritability improved with inclusion of behavioral data collected in adolescence but remained modest. However, there was no ability to predict adult outcomes for other aspects such as well-being, depression, and positive and negative affect at any age.

Adverse event reporting in intervention research for young autistic children

Kristen Bottema-Beutel et al.

Summary: Our study found that only a small number of interventions for young autistic children reported on adverse events and effects, suggesting a need for researchers to systematically monitor, categorize, and report adverse events in order for professionals and families to make more informed decisions regarding interventions.

Can Familial Risk for ADHD Be Detected in the First Two Years of Life?

Meghan Miller et al.

Summary: The study found that infants with a family history of ADHD already displayed behaviors related to inattention and hyperactivity as early as 12 months of age, and parents of these infants showed more concerns about their behavior and temperament. This suggests the potential for early detection of genetic liability for ADHD and the importance of well-designed family risk studies for clinical value.
