Variable Patterns of Remission From ADHD in the Multimodal Treatment Study of ADHD

Margaret H. Sibley et al.

Summary: The study found that approximately 30% of children with ADHD experienced full remission at some point during the follow-up period, but a majority of them (60%) experienced recurrence after the initial period of remission. Only 9.1% of the sample showed sustained remission by the end of the study, and only 10.8% demonstrated stable ADHD persistence across the study time points. Most participants with ADHD (63.8%) had fluctuating periods of remission and recurrence over time.

Disentangling nature from nurture in examining the interplay between parent-child relationships, ADHD, and early academic attainment

Summary: The study highlights the heritable influences on child impulsivity/activation, which can evoke maternal and paternal hostility, leading to the continuation of ADHD symptoms. Both maternal and paternal hostility contribute to impairments in children's math ability, but not reading ability.

Adolescent Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Understanding Teenage Symptom Trajectories

Summary: The symptoms of adolescent ADHD are influenced by genetic factors, while neural studies suggest that the remission of ADHD symptoms in adolescence may be related to the retention of childhood neural features or unique neural activity patterns during adolescence.

Meta-Analysis of Sex Differences in ADHD Symptoms and Associated Cognitive Deficits

Maryanne Loyer Carbonneau et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that boys with ADHD exhibit more hyperactivity symptoms than girls, and also experience more difficulties in motor response inhibition and cognitive flexibility. While youths with ADHD show more executive deficits compared to non-ADHD peers, there is no sex difference in this regard.

Long-term outcomes of females with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: increased risk for self-harm

Sinclaire M. O'Grady et al.

Summary: While research on the long-term outcomes of girls with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is lacking, there is a significant risk of self-harm among adolescents and young adults. The study presents a dual-process model involving trait impulsivity and family- and peer-related contributors to this risk. Recommendations for assessment and preventive intervention are provided.

Prevalence and Risk Factors Associated With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Among US Black Individuals A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Jude Mary Cenat et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of ADHD and identify associated risk factors among US Black individuals. The results suggest that Black individuals are at higher risk for ADHD diagnoses than the general US population, highlighting the importance of increasing ADHD assessment and monitoring among Black individuals from different social backgrounds. The study emphasizes the need for establishing accurate diagnoses and culturally appropriate care for ADHD among US Black children, adolescents, and adults.

Childhood predictors and moderators of lifetime risk of self-harm in girls with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

Jocelyn Meza et al.

Summary: Most females with a history of self-harm engaged in such behaviors during adolescence but stopped by adulthood. Predictors of NSSI included early externalizing symptoms, overall executive functioning, and father's negative parenting; predictors of SI included adverse childhood experiences and low self-esteem; predictors of SA included early externalizing symptoms, adverse childhood experiences, and low self-esteem.

Initial Engagement in Oral Sex and Sexual Intercourse Among Adolescent Girls With and Without Childhood Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Ashley Halkett et al.

Summary: This study investigated initial engagement in oral sex and sexual intercourse among adolescent girls with and without childhood ADHD diagnosis. The findings suggest that girls with a childhood ADHD diagnosis started engaging in oral sex at a younger age and reported more oral sex partners, particularly those with the combined presentation of ADHD. However, there were no significant differences in age of initial sexual intercourse or number of male sexual partners. This highlights the need for longitudinal research to quantify and distinguish between different forms of sexual behavior and their potential impact on later reproductive and mental health outcomes.
