Molecular Simulation of Electrode-Solution Interfaces

Laura Scalfi et al.

Summary: The interface between metallic electrodes and electrolyte solutions plays a crucial role in key industrial processes, with the structure and reactivity of the interface depending on electrostatic interactions and solvent properties. Modeling these interfaces is challenging due to the intersection of quantum chemistry and statistical physics.

Controlling potential difference between electrodes based on self-consistent-charge density functional tight binding

Jun Oshiki et al.

Summary: Understanding the electronic response of electrode surfaces in electrochemical systems is crucial for investigating unique interfacial properties, and a new method based on self-consistent-charge density functional tight binding has been developed to efficiently model large systems. This method allows for accurate quantum mechanical description of electrode electronic response, outperforming classical approaches, and has been successfully applied to simulate two platinum electrodes under an applied voltage.

Size dependence of hydrophobic hydration at electrified gold/water interfaces

Alessandra Serva et al.

Summary: Hydrophobic hydration at the metal/water interface is studied using constant applied potential molecular dynamics in this work. The study proposes an adaptation of the Lum-Chandler-Weeks theory to describe the free energy of hydrophobic hydration at the interface, showing a preference for outer-sphere adsorption of small hydrophobic solutes at the gold surface and higher free energy cost for hydrating larger hydrophobes at the interface compared to the bulk.
