How to quantify and avoid finite size effects in computational studies of crystal nucleation: The case of heterogeneous ice nucleation

Sarwar Hussain et al.

Summary: Computational studies of crystal nucleation can be influenced by finite size effects, affecting the composition and rates of nucleation. Depending on the size of the model ice nucleating particles (INPs), different regimes of rate dependence on INP dimension can be identified.

Molecular Understanding of Homogeneous Nucleation of CO2 Hydrates Using Transition Path Sampling

A. Arjun et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide hydrate is a solid composed of water cages that encapsulate CO2 molecules. Homogeneous nucleation mechanism and different cage types are influenced by temperature, providing insight into the molecular mechanisms behind polymorph formation. Transition path sampling allows for unbiased study of complex phase transformations.

Nucleation rates from small scale atomistic simulations and transition state theory

Kristof M. Bal

Summary: This study demonstrates a general method for accurately estimating nucleation rates from molecular dynamics trajectories by utilizing free energy barriers, transition state theory, and a dynamical correction for diffusive recrossing. By employing enhanced sampling methods and reconstructing the free energy surface, the issues of time scale and finite size effects are effectively addressed, leading to accurate results across a wide range of orders of magnitude.

How a supercooled liquid borrows structure from the crystal

Ulf R. Pedersen et al.

Summary: Through computer simulations, it has been established that the structure of a supercooled binary atomic liquid mixture consists of common neighbor structures similar to those found in the equilibrium crystal phase, a Laves structure. Despite the large accumulation of crystal-like structure, it is confirmed that the supercooled liquid represents a true metastable liquid and can borrow the crystal structure without being destabilized. The origin of all instances of liquids with a strongly favored local structure is being considered.

Transition Path Sampling as Markov Chain Monte Carlo of Trajectories: Recent Algorithms, Software, Applications, and Future Outlook

Peter G. Bolhuis et al.

Summary: The development of enhanced sampling methods for investigating rare but important events has been a focus in the molecular simulation field. Transition path sampling (TPS) circumvents the need for prior knowledge of the reaction coordinate by generating a dynamical trajectory ensemble. The recent development of OpenPathSampling and PyRETIS has enabled easy and flexible implementation of novel path sampling algorithms.

Classical nucleation theory of ice nucleation: Second-order corrections to thermodynamic parameters

Chaohong Wang et al.

Summary: Accurately estimating the nucleation rate is crucial, but it depends on thermodynamic parameters, leading to uncertainties in the estimates. Researchers derived second-order analytical formulas to describe the temperature dependence of these parameters, providing a new method for estimating them.
