Sex-specific differences in peripheral blood leukocyte transcriptional response to LPS are enriched for HLA region and X chromosome genes

Michelle M. Stein et al.

Summary: The study investigated sex-specific transcriptional responses of peripheral blood leukocytes to innate immune stimulation and found that HLA and X-linked genes may disproportionately contribute to sex disparities in risk for immune-mediated diseases.

Sexual Dimorphism in Innate Immunity: The Role of Sex Hormones and Epigenetics

Rebecca Shepherd et al.

Summary: Sexual dimorphism in immune response is well demonstrated in humans, with females exhibiting lower infection rates and higher incidence of autoimmune diseases compared to males, potentially linked to the effects of sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Studies have shown sex-specific transcriptome and epigenetic changes, which may contribute to the sexually dimorphic immune response.

Monocytes and macrophages in COVID-19: Friends and foes

Sepideh Meidaninikjeh et al.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, leads to high mortality rates globally, mainly due to hyperinflammatory responses. Monocytes and macrophages play crucial roles in the innate immune defense against viral infections, but aberrant alterations can result in harmful effects such as cytokine storm in severe cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Cholesterol loading suppresses the atheroinflammatory gene polarization of human macrophages induced by colony stimulating factors

Jani Lappalainen et al.

Summary: In atherosclerotic lesions, blood-derived monocytes differentiate into distinct macrophage subpopulations, and further into cholesterol-filled foam cells under the influence of cytokines. Cholesterol loading affects the gene expression and cholesterol metabolism of macrophages, potentially reducing their atheroinflammatory potential.

Human Red Blood Cells Modulate Cytokine Expression in Monocytes/Macrophages Under Anoxic Conditions

Antonella Antonelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of oxygen tension on stem and progenitor cell proliferation, differentiation, and cytokine expression in the bone marrow hematopoietic niche. Results showed that the presence of red blood cells up-regulated IL-8 mRNA while IL-6 and VEGF mRNA expression appeared down-regulated, and administration of RBCs led to an increase in TNF alpha expression levels in MonoMac 6 cells, suggesting a potential hypoxia-independent modulation of these factors. Further studies should explore these preliminary observations in more detail considering the role of oxygen in the hematopoietic niche.
