UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Small RNAs are modified with N-glycans and displayed on the surface of living cells

Ryan A. Flynn et al.

Summary: This study challenges the conventional view that RNA is not a major target of glycosylation by providing evidence that mammals use RNA as a third scaffold for glycosylation. The researchers found that conserved small noncoding RNAs bear sialylated glycans, which are present in multiple cell types and mammalian species. The majority of glycoRNAs were located on the cell surface and were shown to interact with anti-dsRNA antibodies and members of the Siglec receptor family, suggesting a direct interface between RNA biology and glycobiology.

Golgi maturation-dependent glycoenzyme recycling controls glycosphingolipid biosynthesis and cell growth via GOLPH3

Riccardo Rizzo et al.

Summary: Research shows that a group of sequentially-acting enzymes in the Golgi bind to the oncogenic protein GOLPH3, affecting glycosphingolipid synthesis and cell proliferation by regulating enzyme localization and degradation rate. These findings reveal a novel oncogenic mechanism of action for GOLPH3 in glycosphingolipid metabolism.
