Summary: This review summarizes the state of forward osmosis (FO) technology for nutrient removal/recovery from wastewater and sludge, aiming to identify areas for future improvements. Further research is needed on the properties of FO, wastewater pretreatment, membrane cleaning strategies, and other factors to promote the full-scale application of FO technology in the future.
