Treadmilling FtsZ polymers drive the directional movement of sPG-synthesis enzymes via a Brownian ratchet mechanism

Joshua W. McCausland et al.

Summary: The FtsZ protein is a key component in bacterial cell division, driving the movement of enzymes that synthesize septal peptidoglycan through treadmilling dynamics. This directional movement is dependent on the binding potential between FtsZ and the enzyme, as well as the balance between enzyme diffusion and FtsZ's treadmilling speed.

FtsZ dynamics in bacterial division: What, how, and why?

Jordan M. Barrows et al.

Summary: Bacterial cell division is coordinated by the divisome, with FtsZ playing a central role. Recent studies have shown that the dynamics of FtsZ are regulated by intrinsic properties of FtsZ and the membrane anchoring protein FtsA. While FtsZ dynamics are broadly required for Z-ring assembly, their role during constriction may vary among bacterial species.

Noc Corrals Migration of FtsZ Protofilaments during Cytokinesis in Bacillus subtilis

Yuanchen Yu et al.

Summary: In bacteria, FtsZ forms a structure (Z-ring) at the midcell to recruit cell division apparatus, while formation of Z-ring over the chromosome is prevented by a phenomenon called nucleoid occlusion. In Bacillus subtilis, nucleoid occlusion is at least partially mediated by a DNA-membrane bridging protein, Noc. Noc's role during cell division is to prevent protofilaments from leaving a Z-ring undergoing cytokinesis and migrating over the nucleoid.

Single-molecule imaging reveals that Z-ring condensation is essential for cell division in Bacillus subtilis

Georgia R. Squyres et al.

Summary: This study used live-cell single-molecule imaging to reveal that the divisome consists of two subcomplexes, showing that different components move differently. FtsZ-binding proteins were found to play a crucial role in bundling FtsZ filaments together to form Z rings, which are essential for cytokinesis.
