A drop in immigration results in the extinction of a local woodchat shrike population

M. Schaub et al.

Summary: The study explores the demography of an endangered species of woodchat shrike on the edge of its distribution range and finds that immigration is the most important factor affecting the annual population growth rate. A population viability analysis shows that the population went extinct 6 years after the end of the study, likely due to the stop of immigration. This highlights the importance of maintaining a sufficient reservoir of potential immigrants for the conservation of local populations.
