The study focused on fabricating and characterizing ChNF-based nanocomposites with biodegradable polymers, such as thermoplastic starch, gelatin, and poly(vinyl alcohol). Mixing ChNF with polymers resulted in more homogeneous surfaces and improved crystalline properties. The nanocomposite films showed increased water vapor permeability compared to pure ChNF film, with varying water solubility values. Incorporating thermoplastic starch, gelatin, and poly(vinyl alcohol) led to enhanced physical and mechanical properties in the nanocomposites, making them potential materials for biodegradable and edible food packaging.
In this study, the fabrication and characterization of chitin nanofiber (ChNF)-based nanocomposites containing biodegradable polymers including thermoplastic starch, gelatin, and poly(vinyl alcohol) were carried out. Field-emission scanning electron microscope micrographs showed that mixing ChNF with polymers generated more homogeneous and integrated surfaces compared to that of pure ChNF film. X-ray diffraction curves demonstrated that the crystalline properties of the nanocomposites were mainly affected by the ChNF content. All nanocomposite films were more permeable to water vapor compared to the pure ChNF film. The control sample (ChNF film) and the nanocomposite containing gelatin exhibited the lowest and the highest water solubility value, respectively. Adding of thermoplastic starch, gelatin, and poly(vinyl alcohol) to ChNF film led to an increase in the physical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. The fabricated nanocomposites were recognized to be potential desirable materials for biodegradable and edible food packaging.
