Evaluation of Seasonal Respiratory Virus Activity Before and After the Statewide COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place Order in Northern California

Elizabeth Partridge et al.

Summary: This cohort study found that after the shelter-in-place order was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there were significantly lower rates of influenza and rhinovirus or enterovirus infections. This indicates that public health initiatives, such as shelter-in-place orders during a pandemic, may be associated with reduced transmission rates of other respiratory viruses in a community.

COVID-19 and Infant Hospitalizations for Seasonal Respiratory Virus Infections, New Zealand, 2020

Adrian Trenholme et al.

Summary: In March 2020, New Zealand implemented a national elimination strategy for coronavirus disease, leading to a significant decrease in hospitalizations for lower respiratory tract infections among infants <2 years of age and cases of respiratory syncytial or influenza virus infection. These findings suggest additional benefits of coronavirus disease control strategies.
