Identification of monocot chimeric jacalin family reveals functional diversity in wheat

Qing-Hu Ma et al.

Summary: The study identified 46 wheat MCJs divided into three subfamilies with mannose-specific lectin activity affecting dehydration tolerance or disease resistance. MCJs are a newly identified subfamily of plant lectins exclusive to Poaceae, consisting of dirigent and jacalin-related lectin domains. The evolution and functions of MCJ are not fully understood, but evidence shows they play a role in stress resistance and defense mechanisms in plants.
