Inflammation, ictogenesis, and epileptogenesis: An exploration through human disease

Tracie Huey-Lin Tan et al.

Summary: Epilepsy is traditionally viewed as a disease of abnormal neuronal signaling and is increasingly linked to abnormalities in the innate and adaptive immune system. Immune responses may disrupt neuronal signaling, leading to acute symptomatic seizures and in some cases, long-term autoimmune epilepsy. Early treatment with immunomodulatory therapies can improve outcomes, but patient identification and treatment selection remain challenging.

Meta-analysis of EEG findings in patients with COVID-19

Takafumi Kubota et al.

Summary: The EEG findings in patients with COVID-19 commonly showed abnormal background activity and generalized slowing, with epileptiform discharges present in 20.3% of cases. However, the proportion of seizures and status epilepticus on EEG was low, at 2.05% and 0.80%, respectively.

Epileptic seizures in multiple sclerosis: prevalence, competing causes and diagnostic accuracy

Friederike Neuss et al.

Summary: This study described a cohort of patients with both MS and epileptic seizures, finding that a significant percentage of MS patients with seizures had competing causes at the time of the first seizure. A detailed diagnostic setup including patient history, EEG, and MRI is recommended for evaluation and treatment decisions.

Olfactory transmucosal SARS-CoV-2 invasion as a port of central nervous system entry in individuals with COVID-19

Jenny Meinhardt et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the nasopharynx and brain, suggesting the virus may enter the CNS through the olfactory mucosa. The virus utilizes the neural-mucosal interface in the olfactory mucosa to penetrate the nervous system, affecting various neuroanatomical areas, including the primary respiratory and cardiovascular control center.

The S1 protein of SARS-CoV-2 crosses the blood-brain barrier in mice

Elizabeth M. Rhea et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the SARS-CoV-2 spike 1 protein can cross the mouse blood-brain barrier and be taken up by both the brain and peripheral tissues. Intravenous injection results in higher levels of protein uptake in the brain compared to intranasal administration. Genetic factors and sex have varying effects on the uptake of the spike protein in different tissues.

COVID-19, de novo seizures, and epilepsy: a systematic review

Ali A. Asadi-Pooya et al.

Summary: This systematic review discusses the evidence of de novo seizures in COVID-19 patients, the impact of the pandemic on people with epilepsy, and EEG findings in COVID-19 patients. The study identified a lack of attention to EEG studies globally and highlighted the need for improved access to care for people with epilepsy through technologies like telemedicine. Further research is needed to understand the susceptibility of individuals with epilepsy to contracting COVID-19.

Environmental enrichment alters neurobehavioral development following maternal immune activation in mice offspring with epilepsy

Maryam Zeraati et al.

Summary: Maternal immune activation can increase seizure susceptibility and psychiatric comorbidities in offspring, leading to anxiety and cognitive deficits with impact on inflammatory parameters, without sex differences in offspring. Environmental enrichment is shown to reverse these effects and can be considered as a potential treatment approach for behavioral abnormalities following maternal immune activation in offspring with epilepsy.

The effect of quarantine due to Covid-19 pandemic on seizure frequency in 102 adult people with epilepsy from Apulia and Basilicata regions, Southern Italy

Giuseppe D'Orsi et al.

Summary: The study showed that about 50% of PwE in Southern Italy experienced changes in seizure frequency during the COVID-19 quarantine period, which were not directly related to COVID-19 infection. Anxiety and stress were identified as the main factors influencing seizure frequency.
