Short-term responses to ocean acidification: effects on relative abundance of eukaryotic plankton from the tropical Timor Sea

Janina Rahlff et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of high CO2 levels on marine planktonic eukaryotes in tropical regions and found that it significantly suppressed the relative abundances of different eukaryotic taxa, including primary producers. The effects of ocean acidification on eukaryotes were consistent between total and active taxa, with species-specific impacts on the relative abundances of operational taxonomic units. Additionally, many eukaryotic taxa were adversely affected by sudden decreases in seawater pH, highlighting the high sensitivity of tropical marine biodiversity to ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification interacts with growth light to suppress CO2 acquisition efficiency and enhance mitochondrial respiration in a coastal diatom

Liming Qu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that coastal diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii's physiological responses to ocean acidification vary with different light levels. Under high pCO2 conditions, CO2 concentrating mechanisms are down-regulated, leading to enhanced growth rate only at low light levels.
