Hypoxia preconditioning protects neuronal cells against traumatic brain injury through stimulation of glucose transport mediated by HIF-1α/GLUTs signaling pathway in rat

Xiaogang Wu et al.

Summary: This study showed that HPC could significantly impact the glucose transport activity in rat cerebral cortex tissue after TBI by increasing the expression of GLUT1 and GLUT3, thus improving hypoxia tolerance and attenuating neuronal loss.

Long-Term Effects of Prenatal Severe Hypoxia on Central and Peripheral Components of the Glucocorticoid System in Rats

Oleg Vetrovoy et al.

Summary: Prenatal severe hypobaric hypoxia leads to continuously elevated corticosterone levels in adult and aged rats, along with increased hepatic glycogen content, dysregulated glucose-6-phosphatase activity, and eventually hypoglycemia. The deficit of hippocampal glucocorticoid receptors resulting from maternal glucocorticoid response to hypoxia remains stable throughout life in the progeny, accompanied by severe disturbances of baseline glucocorticoid levels and its peripheral reception.

Developmental Profile of Brain Neprilysin Expression Correlates with Olfactory Behaviour of Rats

Dimitrii S. Vasilev et al.

Summary: NEP mRNA expression in various brain regions increases during the first postnatal month in rats, with the highest levels in the olfactory bulb and striatum. However, levels sharply decrease in certain regions by 3 months and 9 months, potentially impacting olfactory function in aged rats. Administration of a histone deacetylase inhibitor can restore NEP expression and improve olfaction in rats with impaired olfaction.

Glucocorticoid-mediated mechanisms of hippocampal damage: Contribution of subgranular neurogenesis

Oleg Podgorny et al.

Summary: This comprehensive overview discusses the interplay between glucocorticoids and adult hippocampal neurogenesis, focusing on the effects of GCs on the generation and integration of new neurons in the hippocampus. Recent findings on how GC signaling mediates impairments of AHN in various brain pathologies are highlighted, emphasizing the importance of the HPA axis/ AHN mutual regulation in the pathogenesis of cognitive and psychiatric disturbances. Understanding the GC-mediated mechanisms involved in alterations in AHN may lead to the identification of molecular targets for ameliorating pathology-induced imbalance in the HPA axis/AHN regulation.

HIF-1α aggravated traumatic brain injury by NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis and activation of microglia

Dong Yuan et al.

Summary: HIF-1α is involved in regulating neuronal death after TBI and inflammation, as shown in a study exploring the regulatory mechanism between HIF-1α and NLRP3 inflammasome. TBI-induced brain injury is characterized by edema, blood-brain barrier disorder, and an upregulation of HIF-1α expression. Inactivation of HIF-1α provided neuroprotection and alleviated brain injury post-TBI by attenuating NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis.

Glucocorticoids, metabolism and brain activity

Aneta Jaszczyk et al.

Summary: The review integrates various experimental approaches to better understand the effects of elevated glucocorticoids on brain activity and metabolism. It suggests that glucocorticoids alter neuronal activity dynamics, leading to context-specific changes in both excitation and inhibition, which support task-related responses. Glucocorticoids also diversify energy sources for the brain and impact carbohydrate reserves, with potential stress due to mismatches in supply and utilization.

High gestational folic acid supplementation prevents hypoxia-ischemia-induced caspase-3 augmenting without changing synapsin and H3 methylation levels in the rat hippocampus

Bruna Ferrary Deniz et al.

Summary: Perinatal asphyxia can have long-lasting effects on brain development in newborns, with recent research suggesting that folic acid supplementation may play a role in mitigating these effects. Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia can lead to cell death and altered synaptic protein expression in the hippocampus of rats, with histone modifications potentially contributing to these pathological changes.

Bidirectional Crosstalk Between Hypoxia Inducible Factors and Glucocorticoid Signalling in Health and Disease

Tineke Vanderhaeghen et al.

Summary: Glucocorticoid-induced and hypoxia-induced transcriptional responses play crucial roles in maintaining tissue homeostasis and regulating cellular stress and inflammatory responses. Cells respond rapidly to hypoxia to prevent metabolic shutdown and death through hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs). The crosstalk between the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and HIFs has been investigated, and the therapeutic effects of GCs on HIF-mediated diseases have been discussed.
