Crosstalk between skeletal and neural tissues is critical for skeletal health

Nethmi Abeynayake et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence highlights the physical and functional association between neural and skeletal systems in forming a neuro-osteogenic network. This communication is crucial for bone skeletal growth, homeostasis, and repair. Disruptions to sympathetic innervation can accelerate conditions like osteoporosis, while various molecular mechanisms mediate communication between bone and neural populations, emphasizing the significant role of cell surface receptors, cytokines, and ligands in regulating skeletal health.

Bio-inspired mechanically adaptive materials through vibration-induced crosslinking

Zhao Wang et al.

Summary: The polymer gel composite material self-strengthens in response to mechanical vibrations similar to observed bone remodelling in animals. It adapts to the mechanical environment by varying its modulus based on force, time, and frequency of agitation, with a 66-fold increase in modulus driven by mechanically responsive ZnO. This material design could have a wide range of applications, from adhesives to materials interfacing with biological systems.

Biomedical applications of environmental friendly poly-hydroxyalkanoates

Sabbir Ansari et al.

Summary: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biological polyesters of hydroxyacids, considered as environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, with biodegradability and biocompatibility. Research on different PHA in cell culture systems or animal hosts in recent years has shown their potential for applications in medical devices.
