Quantitative proteomic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid of women newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

Eliska Jankovska et al.

Summary: This study identified new proteins associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) through proteomic analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The results suggest that these proteins are directly linked to myelin loss and axonal damage in women newly diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS).

PTM-Shepherd: Analysis and Summarization of Post-Translational and Chemical Modifications From Open Search Results

Daniel J. Geiszler et al.

Summary: PTM-Shepherd is a bioinformatics tool that automates the characterization of post-translational modification profiles detected in open searches based on attributes like amino acid localization and fragmentation spectra similarity. It can also perform multiexperiment comparisons to study changes in modification profiles, such as data generated in different laboratories or under different conditions.

Nile Red fluorescence spectroscopy reports early physicochemical changes in myelin with high sensitivity

Wulin Teo et al.

Summary: The molecular composition of myelin membranes is crucial for their structure and function, even minute changes can have significant effects. A spectroscopic technique using Nile Red dye was developed to identify chemical polarity of myelin lipids. This technique proved useful in detecting subtle myelin changes in prelesioned tissues.

Cerebrospinal fluid proteome shows disrupted neuronal development in multiple sclerosis

Ellen F. Mosleth et al.

Summary: This study identified a common protein signature of MS/CIS patients that is not associated with elevated intrathecal inflammation, suggesting that these patients may suffer from disrupted neural development from an early stage of the disease.

CSF proteome in multiple sclerosis subtypes related to brain lesion transcriptomes

Maria L. Elkjaer et al.

Summary: Using proteomic approaches, 8 proteins were found to differentiate multiple sclerosis subtypes, with secondary progressive MS showing the largest difference from controls. The genes of these proteins were also present in MS brain lesions, suggesting potential biomarkers for differentiation.

Reducing acetylated tau is neuroprotective in brain injury

Min-Kyoo Shin et al.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury induces tau acetylation, leading to neurodegeneration and neurobehavioral impairment. Protecting mice from TBI can be achieved by blocking GAPDH S-nitrosylation, inhibiting p300/CBP, or stimulating Sirtuin1. Ac-tau may serve as a therapeutic target and potential blood biomarker of TBI.

Sex differences in the blood-brain barrier and neurodegenerative diseases

Callie M. Weber et al.

Summary: The number of people diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases is increasing, and there are clear sexual dimorphisms in diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. While sex as a biological variable is now included in animal studies, it is rarely considered in in vitro models. Sex and sex hormones may affect BBB integrity, with potential mechanisms explained in this review. Current in vitro BBB bioengineered models show promise in studying sex differences in neurodegenerative diseases.
