Excellent triple-shape memory effect and superior recovery stress of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer fiber

Xiaoming Qi et al.

Summary: The study successfully achieved excellent triple shape memory effect by regulating the crystalline structure transformation of EVA fibers. Dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry observed a wide melting transition temperature, indicating the superior shape memory effect and tunable reversible effect of EVA fibers. Thermo-mechanical testing showed that EVA fibers have the ability to achieve an excellent triple shape memory effect and a superior recovery stress.

Constitutive Modeling of multi-stimuli-responsive shape memory polymers with multi-functional capabilities

Mahdi Baniasadi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new class of shape memory polymers called thermo-electro-magneto-responsive fibrous SMPs, which demonstrate enhanced shape recovery and recovery force at lower working temperatures. By developing a three-dimensional constitutive model and utilizing electro-magneto-visco-hyperelasticity theory, the study shows that electro-magnetic features can significantly improve the shape memory effect and bio-applicability of TEMFSMPs. Through numerical simulations and experimental validation, it is found that the orientation and stiffness of fibers can effectively tune the performance of TEMFSMPs, leading to highly enhanced stress/strain recovery and reduced working temperatures.

Multi-modal commutative dynamics in semi-crystalline polymers undergoing multiple shape memory behavior

Xiaodong Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a one-dimensional multi-modal dynamic model to describe the multi-shape memory effect in semi-crystalline shape memory polymers. By utilizing a three-phase model and phase transition theory, the cooperative dynamics between amorphous and crystalline components were investigated. The newly established model shows good agreement with experimental results in predicting various shape memory effects in semi-crystalline polymers.

Summary: The study introduces a novel optimization framework for designing structures with memory characteristics using shape memory polymers (SMPs). Finite element analysis is utilized to predict the temperature-dependent memory properties of SMPs. The thermo-mechanical characteristics of SMPs are exploited to enable structural morphing and tailored response through multimaterial topology optimization.

Summary: Smart shape memory polymers (SMPs) consist of frozen phase and active phase, and the distribution, dispersion, and orientation of each phase can affect the thermomechanical response of the material. A novel approach based on a blend of two different components is proposed to improve and enhance the properties of SMPs.
