Biomarkers, matrices and analytical methods targeting human exposure to chemicals selected for a European human biomonitoring initiative

Katrin Vorkamp et al.

Summary: The major purpose of human biomonitoring is to map and assess human exposure to chemicals. The European initiative HBM4EU has prioritized seven substance groups and two metals. Suitable biomarkers, human matrices, and analytical methods were selected based on scientific literature for each substance group or metal to work towards comparable European-wide data.

Interlaboratory comparison investigations (ICIs) and external quality assurance schemes (EQUASs) for flame retardant analysis in biological matrices: Results from the HBM4EU project

Darina Dvorakova et al.

Summary: The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative has conducted quality assurance and control schemes to evaluate the analytical comparability and accuracy of laboratories analyzing flame retardants in serum and urine. Results from four rounds from 2018 to 2020 showed varying levels of success among participating laboratories, with a core network found for certain HFRs but critical gaps in capacity for others. The evaluation highlighted the need for improvement in analytical capabilities, particularly for certain chemicals and biomarkers.

Interlaboratory comparison investigations (ICI) and external quality assurance schemes (EQUAS) for cadmium in urine and blood: Results from the HBM4EU project

Stefanie Nuebler et al.

Summary: Human biomonitoring of cadmium is crucial for assessing and preventing toxic exposure, with the EU aiming to harmonize and advance monitoring across Europe. The QA/QC program successfully established a network of laboratories in 20 European countries with high analytical comparability and accuracy, ensuring satisfactory results for most participating labs.

Chemical prioritisation strategy in the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU)-Development and results

Eva Ougier et al.

Summary: The HBM4EU project established a prioritisation strategy to determine a final list of substances for research activities, based on knowledge gaps identified by policy makers and stakeholders, as well as scoring by experts and alignment with European policy priorities. The final list of 9 priority substances/groups reflected hazardous properties, exposure characteristics, societal concern, regulatory status, available analytical methods, and project resources.
