Lean flammability limit of high-dilution spark ignition with ethanol, propanol, and butanol

Brian Gainey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the lean flammability limits of six potential carbon-neutral fuels for high-dilution spark ignition, revealing ethanol as having the leanest limit and n-butanol and isobutanol with the richest limits. The addition of external EGR decreased the lean limit of each fuel, with ethanol being the least sensitive and isopropanol the most sensitive to EGR. Overall, employing a high dilution strategy increased cycle efficiency for each fuel, making ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, and sec-butanol promising candidates for high-dilution SI with carbon-neutral fuel.

Thermal efficiency improvement of super-lean burn spark ignition engine by stratified water insulation on piston top surface

Tsuyoshi Nagasawa et al.

Summary: The study proposes that thermal stratification technique by in-cylinder water injection towards piston surface can improve the thermal efficiency of spark ignition engine under super-lean burn conditions, reduce heat flux on the piston surface, mitigate knock, enhance combustion, and increase indicated thermal efficiency. The research also demonstrates that water injection at an earlier stage of a compression stroke makes it possible to mitigate knock without significant increase in combustion instability, and enables spark advance and combustion enhancement. Additionally, applying the concept of stratified water insulated combustion architecture at higher compression ratios can further enhance thermal efficiency with minimum spark advance for best torque operation.

Behavior of hydrogen hollow-cone spray depending on the ambient pressure

Sanguk Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigated the behavior of hydrogen spray in relation to ambient pressure, revealing that high ambient pressure affects the morphology and spreading characteristics of the spray, leading to aerodynamic effects. It is suggested that hydrogen direct injection can contribute to future sustainable mobility.

Lean combustion of stratified hydrogen in a constant volume chamber

Sanguk Lee et al.

Summary: The study looked into using hydrogen as a fuel for internal combustion engines to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. It found that the mixture formation time (MFT) and ambient density played a significant role in hydrogen stratified charge combustion (SCC). By optimizing injection and ignition timings, high-efficiency and clean transportation may be achievable.

Green hydrogen as an alternative fuel for the shipping industry

Selma Atilhan et al.

Summary: This paper critically assesses the potential usage of green hydrogen in the shipping industry, evaluating production routes, techno-economic performance, storage, and safety, and benchmarking compared to existing production routes specific to shipping industry applications. Important metrics for liquid hydrogen are analyzed to evaluate production cost and GHG emissions for various routes, and a comparison is made for the safety and health issues of hydrogen compared to conventional and emerging maritime shipping fuels.
