Biowaste-to-bioplastic (polyhydroxyalkanoates): Conversion technologies, strategies, challenges, and perspective

Shashi Kant Bhatia et al.

Summary: Biowaste management is a challenging task due to its high nutrient content which can pose serious environmental and health risks if improperly disposed. Researchers are focusing on integrating biowaste management with commercial products like volatile fatty acids, biohydrogen, and bioplastic. PHA production from various biowastes has shown success, with crucial factors such as carbon and nitrogen sources being important for production. This review highlights recent advancements in PHA production from biowaste sources and the challenges that need to be addressed for bioplastics to become a viable alternative to synthetic plastics.
