Enhanced cryogenic tensile properties with multi-stage strain hardening through partial recrystallization in a ferrous medium-entropy alloy

Jae Wung Bae et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the formation of partially recrystallized bimodal microstructures in the Fe60Co15Ni15Cr10 (at%) ferrous medium-entropy alloy through a single-step heat treatment after cold-rolling. This process enhances the yield-strength and ultimate-tensile-strength of the alloy while maintaining a persistent ductility of 61%, thus avoiding the strength-ductility trade-off. The retention of deformation substructures allows for a significant increase in yield-strength compared to a fully-recrystallized state.

Analysis of deformation behavior of VCoNi medium-entropy alloy at temperatures ranging from 77 K to 573 K

Zhenhua Han et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of VCoNi medium-entropy alloy was experimentally investigated in the temperature range of 77 K to 573 K. It was found that high-density nanosized dislocation substructures and deformation twins played a major role in tensile deformation at 77 K, while a dynamically precipitated V-rich phase had an apparent influence on deformation behavior above 473 K. The alloy exhibited excellent mechanical properties, but the decreased FCC stability at higher temperatures could result in changes in mechanical properties.

Temperature- and strain-dependent thermally-activated deformation mechanism of a ferrous medium-entropy alloy

Jungwan Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the quasi-static tensile properties of Fe60Co15Ni15Cr10 ferrous medium-entropy alloy at 298 K and 77 K in terms of thermally-activated deformation mechanism. The alloy showed relatively high strain rate sensitivity and low activation volume at 77 K, where deformation-induced martensitic transformation occurred. Different rate-controlling mechanisms were identified at both temperatures for early and latter deformation, with dislocation behaviors supporting the outstanding cryogenic tensile properties of the alloy.
