Dietary sodium restriction sex specifically impairs endothelial function via mineralocorticoid receptor-dependent reduction in NO bioavailability in Balb/C mice

Jessica L. Faulkner et al.

Summary: Female Balb/C mice exhibit better baseline endothelial relaxation and vascular constriction responses compared to males. Sodium restriction impairs endothelial function, dependent on nitric oxide, and increases vascular contractility in female mice by reducing vascular endothelial nitric oxide synthase and NOX4 expression, which eliminates the baseline sex difference. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism can protect female mice from sodium restriction-induced endothelial dysfunction, but not the increase in vascular contractility.
