Siloxyaluminate and Siloxygallate Complexes as Models for Framework and Partially Hydrolyzed Framework Sites in Zeolites and Zeotypes

James P. Dombrowski et al.

Summary: Anionic molecular models for nonhydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed aluminum and gallium framework sites on silica were synthesized and characterized. The models showed potential pathways for the formation of active sites for Meerwin-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) transfer hydrogenations with Al/Ga-doped silica catalysts through the formation of benzyloxide complexes upon reaction with benzyl alcohol.

Propane Dehydrogenation on Ga2O3-Based Catalysts: Contrasting Performance with Coordination Environment and Acidity of Surface Sites

Pedro Castro-Fernandez et al.

Summary: The study investigated the coordination environment and acidity of surface sites in different Ga2O3 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation, with spectroscopic data suggesting that weak Lewis acid surface sites in beta-Ga2O3 contribute to its superior catalytic activity compared to alpha-Ga2O3 and gamma-Ga2O3.

Strain in Silica-Supported Ga(III) Sites: Neither Too Much nor Too Little for Propane Dehydrogenation Catalytic Activity

C. S. Praveen et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the catalytic activity of Ga(III) sites on SiO2 towards propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction using first-principles calculations. The research demonstrates the importance of strain on the reactivity of these sites, highlighting the need for a balance in strain for an effective catalytic site for PDH. Overall, the work provides insights into the intrinsic activity of acidic Ga single sites on SiO2 towards the PDH reaction and suggests potential for designing better single-site catalysts.

Deciphering the Phillips Catalyst by Orbital Analysis and Supervised Machine Learning from Cr Pre-edge XANES of Molecular Libraries

David Trummer et al.

Summary: Despite more than 60 years of research, unveiling the nature and distribution of surface sites in heterogeneous catalysts, particularly the Phillips catalyst (CrO3/SiO2), remains a grand challenge. In this work, a library of Cr K-edge XANES spectra for tailored molecular Cr complexes was built, and quantitative analysis revealed the origin of pre-edge features. Machine learning algorithm Extra Trees was trained on experimental and theoretical spectra to predict Cr oxidation states, interatomic distances, and ligand types, successfully uncovering the site distribution in the Phillips catalyst at different stages.

Olefin oligomerization by main group Ga3+ and Zn2+ single site catalysts on SiO2

Nicole J. LiBretto et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that silica-supported, single-site catalysts containing immobilized main group Zn2+ and Ga3+ ion sites can catalyze the oligomerization of ethylene and propylene to produce linear olefins, with rates similar to Ni2+ and higher molecular weight olefins for Ga3+. The oligomerization was suggested to occur via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and beta-hydride elimination elementary steps, with initiation proposed to occur through heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene at around 250 degrees C. This study illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for developing new oligomerization processes.

Heterogeneous alkane dehydrogenation catalysts investigated via a surface organometallic chemistry approach

Scott R. Docherty et al.

Summary: The review discusses the use of model dehydrogenation catalysts for light alkanes prepared via surface organometallic chemistry, with a specific focus on molecular strategies for deconvoluting complex heterogeneous materials. Challenges associated with proposed reactions and overarching themes observed from systematic studies using model SOMC catalysts are highlighted.
