Ordovician palaeogeography and climate change

L. Robin M. Cocks et al.

Summary: The new palaeogeographical reconstructions show substantial global cooling during the Ordovician, which greatly affected the evolution rates of various animal groups. This period also marked the most varied and changeable climates of the whole Phanerozoic, culminating in the 'Hirnantian' ice age.

Towards interactive global paleogeographic maps, new reconstructions at 60, 40 and 20 Ma

F. Poblete et al.

Summary: In this study, a reproducible and systematic approach to paleogeographic reconstruction was developed, resulting in worldwide Cenozoic paleogeographic maps at 60, 40, and 20 Ma. Utilizing extensive geological data, a global plate kinematic model was generated, and key features such as paleo-shorelines and paleo-elevations were defined and estimated. The study also addresses controversies in the India-Asia collision mechanisms and provides alternate reconstructions for each time slice.

Extending full-plate tectonic models into deep time: Linking the Neoproterozoic and the Phanerozoic

Andrew S. Merdith et al.

Summary: Recent progress in plate tectonic reconstructions has expanded beyond continental drift to reconstruct the full evolving configuration of tectonic plates and plate boundaries. A continuous full-plate model spanning 1 billion years to present-day has been developed, incorporating a revised model for the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian period and connecting it with models of the Phanerozoic. The model is geologically constrained and based on preserved data from past plate boundaries, with the goal of providing a detailed and self-consistent tectonic reconstruction for the last billion years of Earth's history.

A high-resolution record of early Paleozoic climate

Samuel L. Goldberg et al.

Summary: By utilizing clumped and bulk isotope analyses of micritic carbonates, this study sheds light on the oxygen isotope information embedded in the Early Paleozoic geological records. With a large dataset and high resolution analyses, new insights into paleoclimate trends are obtained.
