Impacts of biochar on anaerobic digestion of swine manure: Methanogenesis and antibiotic resistance genes dissemination

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: The addition of biochar significantly increased methane yield during anaerobic digestion of swine manure, while reducing the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes. Furthermore, biochar indirectly affected ARGs by altering microbial structure and the integrase gene intI1.

Biosynthesized Schwertmannite@Biochar composite as a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for the degradation of sulfanilamide antibiotics

Zhaoshun Yang et al.

Summary: Schwertmannite was successfully loaded onto biochar to form Sch@BC using a biosynthetic method. The catalytic activity of Sch@BC in the Fenton-like degradation of sulfamethoxazole was systematically investigated, showing potential for application in degrading sulfanilamide antibiotics. The results provide theoretical basis and practical guidance for the design of new catalysts using biochar as a support material.

Improved anaerobic digestion of swine manure by simultaneous ammonia recovery using gas-permeable membranes

I. Gonzalez-Garcia et al.

Summary: Removal of NH3 using gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology can improve AD process performance and biogas production. The reductions in TAN and FA levels by GPM system positively impact both the quality and quantity of the biogas produced by AD of swine manure. Additionally, ammonia nitrogen recovery in the form of ammonium sulphate further enhances the benefits of the AD-GPM configuration.

Identification of microorganisms responsible for foam formation in mesophilic anaerobic digesters treating surplus activated sludge

Chenjing Jiang et al.

Summary: Foam formation is a common operational problem in anaerobic digestion systems, with little known about the identity of foam-stabilising microorganisms. This study identified putative foam-forming microorganisms in mesophilic digesters, with species from the genus Candidatus Microthrix correlated to high foaming potential. Additionally, concentrations of ammonium and total nitrogen were strongly correlated to the presence of foam-forming organisms.
