Pre-sowing soil water conditions and water conservation measures affecting the yield and water productivity of summer maize

Qin Fang et al.

Summary: The annual double cropping of winter wheat and summer maize in the North China Plain (NCP) plays a crucial role in ensuring food supply. Limited irrigation water supply due to water shortage negatively affects the grain production of both winter wheat and summer maize. Water conservation techniques such as using straw mulch and reducing planting density can increase grain production and water use efficiency under limited water supply conditions.

Reducing environmental risk by improving crop management practices at high crop yield levels

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that multiple crop management practices, such as increasing crop density, optimizing the amount and ratio of nitrogen application, and using alternate wetting irrigation, significantly improved soil structure and root activity, enhancing nutrient uptake and reducing nitrogen residue. These practices led to reduced nitrogen fertilizer input, increased fertilizer nitrogen recovery efficiency, and decreased nitrogen losses to the environment.
