Auxilin-like protein MoSwa2 promotes effector secretion and virulence as a clathrin uncoating factor in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae

Muxing Liu et al.

Summary: This study revealed a novel role of the COPII uncoating factor MoSwa2 in vesicular transport, showing its critical importance in suppressing host immunity and pathogenicity in M. oryzae. MoSwa2 deficiency resulted in impaired secretion of extracellular proteins, affecting the growth of invasive hyphae and the inhibition of host immunity. Additionally, the study identified the extracellular protein MoSef1 as an apoplastic virulent factor that inhibits host immune response.

The Fungal Effector Avr-Pita Suppresses Innate Immunity by Increasing COX Activity in Rice Mitochondria

Jingluan Han et al.

Summary: The effector Avr-Pita from the fungal pathogen M. oryzae enhances COX activity in the host plant rice by targeting the mitochondria and interacting with the regulator OsCOX11, thereby reducing ROS accumulation and suppressing host innate immunity against the pathogen.

Phosphorylation-dependent subfunctionalization of the calcium-dependent protein kinase CPK28

Melissa Bredow et al.

Summary: Phosphorylation of Ser318 is crucial for the activation of CPK28 in immune homeostasis and stem elongation, providing protection against immune response initiation in the absence of infection. In contrast, Ser318 phosphorylation is not necessary for stem elongation, indicating pathway-specific requirements for phosphorylation-based Ca2+-sensitivity priming. This research also suggests a potential biotechnological application in enhancing resistance to microbial pathogens without affecting yield through conserved Ser318 phosphorylation in related group IV CDPKs.

Poaceae-specific cell wall-derived oligosaccharides activate plant immunity via OsCERK1 during Magnaporthe oryzae infection in rice

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: The rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae secretes endoglucanases that release specific oligosaccharides from rice cell walls during infection, triggering immunity by promoting dimerization of OsCERK1 and OsCEBiP receptors.

PTI-ETI crosstalk: an integrative view of plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: Plants have innate immune responses to resist pathogen attacks, involving pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) and nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat containing receptors (NLRs) that lead to pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI). Despite different activation mechanisms, PTI and ETI converge into similar downstream responses, with evidence of interactions and shared components between PRR-mediated and NLR-mediated signaling cascades. Future research on signal collaboration between PRR-initiated and NLR-initiated immunity will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the plant immune system.
