Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiencye-associated panniculitis

Alessandro N. Franciosi et al.

Summary: The typical features and investigation of AATD-associated panniculitis need further clarification. Dapsone is the most cost-effective therapeutic option, while intravenous AAT augmentation therapy is the most efficacious.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) augmentation therapy in individuals with the PI*MZ genotype: a pro/con debate on a working hypothesis

Igor Barjaktarevic et al.

Summary: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a genetic condition caused by reduced levels of alpha-1 antitrypsin, predisposing individuals to lung, liver, or other systemic diseases. The management of individuals with the PI*MZ genotype remains less clear compared to those with the most common severe deficiency genotype. There is limited evidence on the clinical benefit of AAT therapy in individuals with the PI*MZ genotype.

There is No Fast Track to Identify Fast Decliners in Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency by Spirometry: A Longitudinal Study of Repeated Measurements

Summary: This study indicates that serial lung function over 18 months cannot effectively identify AATD patients with rapidly declining lung function. There is a pressing need for alternative biomarkers to assist in identifying these patients at an earlier stage.

Pleiotropic associations of heterozygosity for the SERPINA1 Z allele in the UK Biobank

Katherine A. Fawcett et al.

Summary: Heterozygosity for the SERPINA1 Z allele in the UK population is associated with various nonrespiratory phenotypes, including increased height and altered disease risk, as well as effects on lung function. The impact of these associations is modified by smoking and sex.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin for cystic fibrosis complicated by severe cytokinemic COVID-19

Oliver J. McElvaney et al.

Summary: This study describes the use of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) as a salvage therapy in a critically unwell patient with cystic fibrosis (CF) who developed COVID-19 while awaiting lung transplantation. The results show that AAT can effectively reduce inflammatory markers and improve clinical symptoms, supporting further research on the use of AAT as a treatment for COVID-19.
