Possible synergy effect of hydrogen sulfide and acetate produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria on inflammatory bowel disease development

Ivan Kushkevych et al.

Summary: This study aimed to monitor processes related to sulfate reduction microbial metabolisms, including identifying main microbial genera and their hydrogen sulfide production in the intestines of healthy and unhealthy individuals, conducting phylogenetic and cluster analysis of SRB isolates, calculating growth kinetic parameters, and analyzing relationships between SRB biomass accumulation, temperature, and pH. The results revealed differences in SRB morphotypes and hydrogen sulfide concentrations between healthy individuals and patients with colitis, indicating potential risk indicators for ulcerative colitis prevalence.

3-Mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase: an enzyme at the crossroads of sulfane sulfur trafficking

Brandan Pedre et al.

Summary: 3-Mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MPST) is involved in hydrogen sulfide generation, protein modification, and cyanide detoxification, while also playing a crucial role in oxidative stress resistance, mitochondrial function, and fatty acid metabolism. However, the overall role and regulation of MPST in the broader physiological context remain to be fully understood.

Metabolomic-proteomic combination analysis reveals the targets and molecular pathways associated with hydrogen sulfide alleviating NAFLD

Zhangnan Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that H2S can alleviate NAFLD by reducing liver weight, body weight, and lipid accumulation, and improving liver pathology and serum biochemical parameters. Metabolomics and proteomics analysis revealed potential molecular targets and mechanisms of H2S in mitigating NAFLD.
