Aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation by Lactobacillus reuteri tryptophan metabolism alleviates Escherichia coli-induced mastitis in mice

Summary: This study found that microbiota-mediated aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation alleviated E. coli-induced mastitis in mice, with insufficient AhR ligands production by disrupting the intestinal microbiota contributing to mastitis progression. Compensating with dietary tryptophan, AhR ligands, or probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri protected mice from E. coli-induced mastitis by rescuing AhR activation, offering a potential strategy for treating mastitis and targeting microbiota-host interaction in diseases intervention.
