Time series monitoring of impervious surfaces and runoff impacts in Metro Vancouver

Ben Hamilton et al.

Summary: Urban areas are rapidly expanding worldwide, resulting in significant changes to land surfaces. This study used Landsat data to analyze urban land cover changes in Metro Vancouver from 1990 to 2015, finding a steady increase in impervious surfaces. As impervious surfaces grew, runoff depths and inundated areas also increased, with projections showing different impacts across the region based on topography and development patterns.

Effects of hydrophyte decomposition on the binding mechanism between fluorescent DOM and copper

Xujing Guo et al.

Summary: Hydrophyte decomposition results in the release of large amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) into aquatic environments, influencing the migration and transformation of heavy metals (HMs). The study found that protein-like materials are abundant in hydrophyte-derived DOM, with different binding properties observed for DOM from hydrophytes with varying dry weight gradients. The log-transformed 2D-COS analysis is an effective tool for identifying binding sites in DOM-Cu(II) complexes.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in an urbanized watershed using spectroscopic analysis

Lili Lyu et al.

Summary: Urbanization significantly influences DOM concentration and composition, with urban waters containing higher DOM content, CDOM absorption, DOM fluorescence intensity, and a greater proportion of protein-like components compared to non-urban waters. Long-term observations show that impervious artificial surfaces from urban expansion contribute to increased DOM quantity and shift DOM composition towards being more protein-like.

Characterizing the spatiotemporal response of runoff to impervious surface dynamics across three highly urbanized cities in southern China from 2000 to 2017

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of runoff to impervious surface area dynamics in three highly urbanized cities in southern China, showing that runoff metrics increased noticeably during 2000-2017 at the city scale. Changes in impervious surface area explain a significant portion of the total variance of increased runoff, and the runoff regime is more responsive at the high impervious surface area percentage.
