Degradation of benzimidazoles by photoperoxidation: metabolites detection and ecotoxicity assessment using Raphidocelis subcapitata microalgae and Vibrio fischeri

Wilson Augusto Lima Venancio et al.

Summary: Benzimidazoles are widely used in treating parasitic diseases. Photoperoxidation process (UV/H2O2) can remove up to 99% of albendazole and fenbendazole, but only 20% of thiabendazole. Primary metabolites of albendazole were observed initially, but transformed with prolonged reaction time. Residual solutions were less harmful to microorganisms, but still toxic to Vibrio fischeri after 30 minutes of reaction.

Degradation of antidepressant pharmaceuticals by photoperoxidation in diverse water matrices: a highlight in the evaluation of acute and chronic toxicity

Mylena Spina et al.

Summary: The UV/H2O2 process was effective in degrading bupropion and fluoxetine in water, but escitalopram required a higher dosage of oxidant and UV-C irradiation due to its recalcitrant nature. The study identified primary metabolites as major by-products generated during degradation, impacting the toxicity of the solution differently towards different trophic levels.

Insights of competitive adsorption on activated carbon of binary caffeine and diclofenac solutions

Florencia M. Onaga Medina et al.

Summary: The study showed that commercial activated carbon derived from peanut shells can effectively adsorb pharmaceutical products such as caffeine and diclofenac, exhibiting a unique isoelectric point and theoretical adsorption isotherm equation. The competitive adsorption of caffeine and diclofenac in single and binary mixtures demonstrated influenced competition rather than pure competition, where the presence of one substance at the surface modified the adsorption parameters of the other.

Adsorption of emerging contaminants from water and wastewater by modified biochar: A review

Ning Cheng et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs), relatively low-concentration but high-toxicity pollutants in the environment, have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Biochar, as a low-cost and high-efficiency adsorbent, has been used to treat ECs in water. There are numerous reports on the removal of ECs from water by modified biochar.
