Summary: The study investigated the process-based pollution characteristics of VOCs from the chemical synthesis pharmaceutical industry in the Yangtze River Delta, China. Aromatics, halocarbons, and oxygenated VOCs were found to be dominant in all process units, with toluene, dichloromethane, ethanol, methanol, and acetone being the most abundant species. The source profiles compiled in this study are necessary additions to current profiles and provide a good reference for studying VOCs emission characteristics.

A Review on Additives-assisted Ultrasound for Organic Pollutants Degradation

Xiaohui Lu et al.

Summary: Considerable attention has been paid to sonochemical advanced oxidation processes (SAOPs) for pollutants removal in the past 2 decades. SAOPs are effective methods for degrading refractory pollutants by generating free radicals such as •OH and •H through water pyrolysis, and high temperature and pressure in cavitation bubbles. Various additives have been used to enhance sonochemical pollutants degradation. This paper reviews the efficiency of ultrasound (US) alone and sono-hybrid systems in degrading pollutants, focusing on the reaction mechanisms of additives for improving degradation. Challenges and research needs for applying SAOPs for removing organic pollutants from aquatic systems are discussed.

Importance of meteorology in air pollution events during the city lockdown for COVID-19 in Hubei Province, Central China

Lijuan Shen et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 lockdown in Central-Eastern China, aerosol optical depth (AOD) decreased while Angstrom exponent (AE) increased. The reductions in AOD and increase in AE were particularly notable in Hubei and Wuhan due to strict restrictions. PM2.5 pollution events in Hubei were attributed to both long-range transport and local pollution, emphasizing the impact of meteorology on regional air quality in China.

Distribution and emissions of trace elements in coal-fired power plants after ultra-low emission retrofitting

Deming Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and emissions of trace elements in coal-fired power plants after ultra-low emission retrofitting using field experiments, literature surveys, and model calculations. The removal efficiencies of volatile Hg and semi-volatile As/Pb were remarkably improved by the retrofitting, while non-volatile elements were slightly affected. The concentrations of trace elements in the emitted gas were low but accounted for a high proportion of the gas phase. The study suggests revising emission limits to control intense trace element pollution in China.
