Modeling the role of riverine organic matter in hypoxia formation within the coastal transition zone off the Pearl River Estuary

Liuqian Yu et al.

Summary: This study found that the nutrients released from river-delivered terrestrial organic matter (OM(terr)) play an important role in promoting hypoxia formation in coastal areas indirectly, with their longer residence time than sinking organic matter contributing to oxygen depletion downstream. Reducing both nutrient and OM(terr)loads is crucial for mitigating hypoxia in the upstream region, while reducing nutrient load alone is more effective for mitigating hypoxia in the downstream.

Climate control on terrestrial biospheric carbon turnover

Timothy Eglinton et al.

Summary: Terrestrial vegetation and soils hold significantly more carbon than the atmosphere. Human activities impacting these reserves may exacerbate climate change uncertainties, particularly in extrapolating point-source observations to ecosystem-scale budgets. The turnover of organic carbon in river basins is influenced by mean annual temperature and precipitation, with implications for soil organic carbon vulnerability on a global scale. The scaling of riverine biospheric-carbon ages with soil OC turnover reveals the potential for constraints on carbon dynamics across broad spatial scales.

The nature, timescale, and efficiency of riverine export of terrestrial organic carbon in the (sub)tropics: Insights at the molecular level from the Pearl River and adjacent coastal sea

Bingbing Wei et al.

Summary: Tropical and subtropical rivers play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle by transporting terrestrial organic carbon to the ocean, with plant wax mean ages being relatively stable across different climate and morphology regions. Sediments in the Pearl River-derived mudbelt contain various sources of organic carbon, with fossil OC showing a higher burial efficiency compared to soil OC. Remineralization processes in the marine environment result in a significant loss of soil OC during transport, impacting the capacity of terrestrial ecosystems to act as CO2 sinks over longer timescales.
