Implications of the distribution of German household environmental footprints across income groups for integrating environmental and social policy design

Gilang Hardadi et al.

Summary: The distribution of German household environmental footprints across income groups shows different consumption patterns, with the lowest-income group having a higher share of electricity and utilities consumption and the highest-income group having a higher share of transportation consumption. The distribution of household carbon footprints in Germany is less equal, and implementing a uniform carbon tax would be regressive, requiring a revenue recycling scheme to alleviate the burden on low-income households.

CO2 emissions inequality through the lens of developing countries

Rui Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed CO2 emissions inequality among different income groups in eight developing countries, and examined the impact of COVID-19 on emissions inequality. The results showed a decrease in CO2 emissions inequality due to the outbreak, but long-term inequality is expected to persist. Targeted poverty elimination measures, reducing excessive consumption, improving energy efficiency, and increasing the share of renewable energy can help reduce CO2 emissions inequality, alleviate poverty, and mitigate climate change.

Household carbon inequality in the U.S

Kuishuang Feng et al.

Summary: Household carbon emissions in the US are significantly influenced by income levels, with higher income groups having much higher carbon footprints compared to lower income groups. Consumption patterns and household size also play a role in affecting carbon emissions. The US has a high average per capita carbon footprint due to factors such as reliance on private transport and heating and cooling emissions.

Air pollution reduction and climate co-benefits in China's industries

Haoqi Qian et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that significant co-benefits can be achieved in China's industrial sectors through interventions like energy intensity improvement, scale structure adjustment, and electrification. Targeted environmental policies towards industrial firms, taking into account firm heterogeneity, can accelerate China's sustainable transformation.

Drivers for the poor air quality conditions in North China Plain during the COVID-19 outbreak

Mengmeng Li et al.

Summary: China's COVID-19 lockdown led to a significant decrease in air pollutant emissions, but the North China Plain still faced serious haze issues. Stagnant weather during the outbreak was identified as a major factor contributing to poor air quality, while industrial and residential emissions, along with increased atmospheric oxidants, were suggested to be responsible for persistent PM2.5 pollution. Understanding the interaction between atmospheric secondary aerosols and NOx emissions is crucial in addressing emerging air pollution problems in China.

The effects of poverty alleviation investment on carbon emissions in China based on the multiregional input-output model

Rao Fu et al.

Summary: The study utilized multiregional input-output analysis and carbon emission intensity analysis to find that investment in poverty alleviation led to an increase in China's economic aggregate growth. The construction and non-metal products industries made the highest contributions to the economy, while the effects of poverty alleviation varied across provinces. Poverty alleviation effectively reduced carbon emission intensity in 26 provinces, but certain provinces showed weaker effects.

COVID-19 implications on household income and food security in Kenya and Uganda: Findings from a rapid assessment

Monica K. Kansiime et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household income and food security in Kenya and Uganda. Results show that income shocks and worsened food security were prevalent, with vulnerable households more likely to adopt food-based coping strategies. Membership in savings and loan groups was associated with less income shocks and reduced food consumption. Recommendations include structural changes in social security systems and support for businesses and food supply chains.
