Emerging risks of toxic metal(loid)s in soil-vegetables influenced by steel-making activities and isotopic source apportionment

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: Industrial activities can lead to contamination by toxic elements in nearby agricultural lands, posing health risks especially for children. Remediation measures are needed to reduce contamination and ensure food safety. Further research is required on the sources, pollution levels, and health risks associated with elements like Tl, As, and Pb in vegetables.

Iron availability is a key factor for freshwater cyanobacterial survival against saline stress

Yuxuan Sun et al.

Summary: Iron availability plays a key role in cyanobacterial survival under varying salinity stress. Siderophores introduced by seawater may accelerate iron dissolution, increase iron availability, and make cyanobacterial cells overcome the adverse effects of high salinity. Siderophore excretion is a survival strategy for phytoplankton facing salinity stress.

Identifying the sources of nitrate contamination using a combined dual isotope, chemical and Bayesian model approach in a tropical agricultural river: Case study in the Mun River, Thailand

Xiao-Long Liu et al.

Summary: This study highlighted the importance of identifying nitrate sources and transformations in agricultural watersheds to protect water sources. The study employed chemical and dual isotopic compositions of nitrate to trace sources and processes, estimating the proportional contribution of different nitrate sources. Results showed that NH4+ concentrations were significantly higher than NO3- in certain river sections during the wet season, indicating enhanced runoff processes and fertilized NH4+ leaching. Additionally, manure and sewage were identified as dominant nitrate sources in certain river sections.

Investigation of Fe isotope systematics for the complete sequence of natural and metallurgical processes of Ni lateritic ores: Implications for environmental source tracing

Gildas Ratie et al.

Summary: Metal isotopes are versatile in tracking pollutant sources, but biogeochemical processes can alter their original fingerprint, hindering contamination tracing. This study explores Fe isotope systematics to evaluate its potential as a tracer in polluted lateritic soil, finding no significant Fe isotopic variation during formation and no fractionation during the smelting process. The conservation of Fe isotopic values from ores to by-products is advantageous for tracing anthropogenic sources from mining activities.

Tracing Riverine Particulate Black Carbon Sources in Xijiang River Basin: Insight from Stable Isotopic Composition and Bayesian Mixing Model

Jinke Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that the PBC/POC ratio in Xijiang River was slightly higher, possibly due to the mobility difference between POC and PBC, aerosol BC input and riverine biogenic effect. The isotopic compositions of PBC depleted 13 C compared with POC and DOC, indicating possible sources from biomass burning or fossil fuel combustion BC particles input and fractionation during soil organic matter production. The MixSIAR model showed that most PBC in the study area was derived from fossil fuel combustion.
