Co-exposure of serum calcium, selenium and vanadium is nonlinearly associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in a Chinese population

Yingnan Lv et al.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of serum calcium and selenium were associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), while higher serum vanadium levels were associated with decreased T2DM risk. Additionally, high co-exposure scores of serum calcium, selenium, and vanadium were positively associated with T2DM risk.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress and oxidative stress drive endothelial dysfunction induced by high selenium

Matshediso Zachariah et al.

Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element for human health, but a balanced intake is crucial for maximizing its health benefits. High selenium intake above physiological levels may increase diabetes risk and result in endothelial dysfunction. Selenium induces cancer cell apoptosis via endoplasmic reticulum stress, but its role in endothelial dysfunction remains unknown.

Summary: This study found that dietary selenium intake and serum selenium were positively associated with elevated levels of plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin, and the relationships were nonlinear. Therefore, additional selenium supplementation for patients with diabetes may not be recommended.

Summary: The study demonstrates an approximately linear relationship between dietary sodium intake and blood pressure, indicating that reducing sodium intake can lead to a decrease in blood pressure, with a more pronounced effect in individuals with hypertension.

Trace element profile and incidence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer: results from the EPIC-Potsdam cohort study

Summary: Different trace elements such as manganese, iron, copper, zinc, iodine, and selenium were associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and colorectal cancer. The contrasting associations found for selenium with diabetes and cancer point towards differential disease-related pathways.

Dietary selenium intake and risk of hospitalization for type 2 diabetes in the Moli-sani study cohort

Summary: High dietary selenium intake was associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for type 2 diabetes, particularly in men. Risk was 64% higher in the fourth quartile compared to the first quartile. This suggests that selenium intake may have an impact on the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Summary: The study suggests that genetically predicted selenium is associated with an increased risk of T2D and certain lipid and glycemic traits, but the impact on CAD remains unclear. Selenium may increase T2D risk and reduce lipids.
