Investigation of sewage sludge and peanut shells co-combustion using thermogravimetric analysis and artificial neural network

Haobo Bi et al.

Summary: This study proposed the co-combustion of sewage sludge and peanut shells to address energy shortage and waste accumulation issues. The research utilized ANN and TGA to investigate the combustion characteristics, finding that peanut shells have a lower combustion temperature range than sewage sludge. The study also established multiple ANN models to predict TG data of the co-combustion, with the best prediction model (ANN21) achieving good overlap with experimental data, showcasing the potential for promoting waste utilization and reduction.

Anaerobic co-digestion of oil-extracted spent coffee grounds with various wastes: Experimental and kinetic modeling studies

M. R. Atelge et al.

Summary: The study found that oil extraction from spent coffee grounds as a pre-treatment strategy has a positive impact on increasing methane yield. Moreover, co-digestion of defatted spent coffee grounds with spent tea waste, glycerin, and macroalgae showed potential advantages. Additionally, a triple mix of defatted spent coffee grounds, spent coffee grounds, and spent tea waste outperformed other mixed substrates.

Single particle combustion studies of coal/biomass fuel mixtures

Samar Das et al.

Summary: The study investigated single particle combustion behaviors of coal-biomass fuel mixtures, showing that rice husk had the longest burning time due to its higher ash content and particle density. Sawdust had a higher ignition mass flux compared to rice husk and wood particles, attributed to its higher volatile content. The primary controlling parameters for fuel conversion in co-combustion systems were found to be particle size, surface area/volume, and particle density.

Competitive adsorption of pharmaceuticals in lake water and wastewater effluent by pristine and NaOH-activated biochars from spent coffee wastes: Contribution of hydrophobic and π-π interactions

Jaegwan Shin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the competitive adsorption mechanisms of pharmaceuticals on pristine and NaOH-activated biochars from spent coffee wastes in lake water and wastewater effluent. The results showed that the NaOH-activated biochar had a higher adsorption capacity for pharmaceuticals due to its enhanced aromatic structure, facilitating pi-pi interactions. The thermodynamic calculations demonstrated that the competitive adsorption on NaOH-activated biochar occurred more spontaneously over a wide range of pH and ionic strength compared to pristine biochar.

Foaming agents from spent coffee grounds: A mechanistic understanding of the modes of foaming and the role of coffee oil as antifoam

S. Padma Ishwarya et al.

Summary: The study isolated foaming fractions from spent coffee grounds to investigate their foam properties. Results showed that a high molecular weight foaming fraction from defatted robusta spent coffee grounds exhibited higher surface activity, comparable foam stability, and greater foamability than synthetic surfactants. Additionally, coffee oil was found to act as an antifoam agent by retarding the foam-forming and stabilizing activities of both spent coffee grounds-based and synthetic foaming agents.

Effect of oxidative torrefaction on high temperature combustion process of wood sphere

Xin Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that oxidative torrefaction (OT) affects the combustion process of wood spheres, increasing char yield and combustion time while forming a more cross-linked aromatic structure that hinders volatile release, resulting in denser and heavier char particles. The findings suggest that mass yield serves as a good indicator for both OT and traditional inert torrefaction processes.
