Multi-elemental composition of white and dark muscles in swordfish

Rui Monteiro et al.

Summary: Concentrations of 16 elements were determined in dorsal white and dark muscle of swordfish, showing dark muscle's enrichment in iron and copper, moderate enhancement in selenium, manganese, zinc, and cadmium, and similar distribution of potentially toxic elements between dark and white muscle, indicating no additional risk in consuming dark muscle.

Heavy metals and potential risks in edible seaweed on the market in Italy

Maria Filippini et al.

Summary: Seaweed food has been historically important in Asia and has gained popularity in the Western diet recently. The study reveals that seaweed can accumulate high levels of heavy metals and iodine, posing health hazards. Proper labeling of seaweed products is crucial to inform consumers about potential risks.

Prescribing sea water quality criteria for arsenic, cadmium and lead through species sensitivity distribution

Panneerselvam Karthikeyan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to derive seawater quality criteria for arsenic, cadmium, and lead based on Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD). Eight species of sensitive marine organisms were assessed for their sensitivity to toxicity of these metals, and acute and chronic toxicity values were derived. The study prescribed Criterion Maximum Concentration, Criterion Continuous Concentration, and Predicted No Effect Concentration values as SWQC to protect marine organisms in different scenarios.

Sources and ecological risk assessment of the seawater potentially toxic elements in Yangtze River Estuary during 2009-2018

Yang Hu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the sources and concentrations of PTE in the Yangtze River Estuary using data from 30 monitoring stations from 2009 to 2018. The results showed that PTE concentrations decreased over the years and generally met seawater quality standards after 2014. Different behavior patterns were observed for different PTE, with some decreasing further from shore and others affected by local industrial and aquacultural activities. Three clusters and two PTE sources were identified, along with suggestions for pollution control.

Arsenic speciation and biotransformation pathways in the aquatic ecosystem: The significance of algae

Muhammad Mahroz Hussain et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination of aquatic systems is a global threat that can harm both humans and other living organisms, and algae play an important role in the biotransformation of arsenic. This review provides an in-depth exploration of various sources of arsenic, its distribution in water bodies, and the factors influencing its behavior in aquatic ecosystems, as well as the potential role of algae in arsenic remediation.

In vitro bioaccessibility, phase partitioning, and health risk of potentially toxic elements in dust of an iron mining and industrial complex

Naghmeh Soltani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the distribution, fractionation, and oral bioaccessibility of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in dust generated by Gol-E-Gohar (GEG) mining and industrial company. Some elements were found to be extremely enriched, but overall the intake of PTEs did not exceed the tolerable daily intake (TDI) values and was not considered a significant risk to workers.

Total arsenic and water-soluble arsenic species in foods of the first German total diet study (BfR MEAL Study)

Christin Hackethal et al.

Summary: Arsenic can be found in foods in both inorganic and organic forms, with fish and seafood having higher levels of total arsenic compared to terrestrial foods. The toxicity of arsenic species varies, and measurements are needed to understand the composition and changes of arsenic species in foods due to processing.
