Accounting for field-scale heterogeneity in the ecohydrological modeling of large arid river basins: Strategies and relevance

Summary: Representing field-scale heterogeneity in ecohydrological modeling of large river basins is a challenge due to the tradeoff between spatial resolution and computational cost. An improved model, HEIFLOW, introduced subgrid structure and multilayer soil water simulation to provide reliable simulations from field scale to large-basin scale. Consideration of subgrid land characteristics, multilayer soil structure, and accurate spatial coverage of irrigation is crucial for successful ecohydrological simulations in arid areas.
