Severe Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Oil Field Produced Water Can Be Linked to Methanogenic Archaea Containing a Special Type of [NiFe] Hydrogenase

Sven Lahme et al.

Summary: Methanogenic archaea play a role in MIC in oil field pipelines, with a newly discovered mechanism involving a (NiFe) hydrogenase. A specific qPCR assay was developed to detect the gene associated with this mechanism, offering a step toward understanding and managing MIC. The proposed MIC biomarker was detected in multiple oil fields, indicating widespread application potential.

Summary: Favorable interspecies associations are prevalent in natural microbial assemblages, with some being cometabolic dependent partnerships involving exchange of extracellular electrons between species. Recent research has focused on DIET and CIET interspecies associations in artificial co-cultures and consortia, emphasizing approaches to validate these relationships.
