Summary: The study investigated the temporal trends of PFASs in beluga whales from the St. Lawrence Estuary in Canada from 2000 to 2017, finding that certain legacy PFASs decreased while unregulated short-chain PFAS alternatives increased over time. Suspect and nontarget screening revealed class-specific temporal trends of PFASs, confirming continuous emissions of unregulated PFASs into the environment. The study also highlighted the higher concentrations of PFASs in newborns and juveniles compared to adults due to potential placental and lactational transfer.
